Oct. 22nd, 2010 11:29 amI wonder what my teenage self would say about this week's announced cuts in the British budget. Probably something like, "Good." I was inclined against the welfare state in those naive days.
But if the state doesn't take care of the poor, who will? The church? Don't make me laugh. No, it seems like massive cuts in the welfare state is desirable one of two ways: if you want people to beg in the street; or if your objective is for people to just quietly die & get out of the way, & you pass laws forcing them to do so by forbidding begging in the street.
Oh, I don't think the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition is quite that far gone. There is a balance to be struck. It remains to be seen if they've cut too far.
